Drug & alcohol with Disabilities

Announced he's an alcoholic to show a one day at a time program.

This has helped him

Background: Master's Degree in Special Education, Taught at SWC Racine  Middle School and High School, Taught MR and CDS and Driver's Ed, retired early due to effects of CP, hooked up with Madison group concerned re; addiction in disabilities community.

 

Statistics:

1.      Rate of addiction in disabilities - doubled recently: there is a problem that needs to be addressed

2.      90% of spinal cord injuries are result of alcohol and drug abuse

3.      10% make it through the program

                        Staff who have contact with the disabled need to know there is a problem                                  with substance abuse.

A.     Sometimes it's looked over due to their disability and unfortunate situation let them it's all they have

B.     Go to doctor and due to physical pair/or disability helps and give pain meds freely and too easily in feeling sorry for disabled persons.   Prescription Medication Addictions

C.     Cognitively disabled: Whose helping and monitoring - they can't make decisions alone and lack of this monitoring is concerns.

            Need to make Providers aware so the staff can be aware of problem and there are                    resources to address the issue for persons with disabilities.

                        WADDA - WI Alcohol & Drug for Disabilities Association; monitored a                                  lot of their studies and used it to create a training program until funding                               ran out.

A.     2004 County recommendations all done

B.     DOA coordinating re; daily living skills; providers with SLO services will be interested in a meeting in afternoon

C.     Expense Reports for contract systems get them in ASAP to get in for budget especially with the holiday time line

D.     RFP's may be going out next year early for new types of services.

E.      Staffing changes: keep utilizing your supervisors and clerical staff.

F.      Hearthside 75-76 moved 28 left to be moved.  Helpful with staff applications being left at Hearthside and helping out with work opportunities
